Through this technology, educators have abundant creative power to design and facilitate meaningful learning experiences. Even though online games and virtual worlds have been around for many years, their use in education has often been experimental or narrowed to a particular course topic. With the rapid changes in technology and advancements with computer interaction, virtual worlds are increasingly being used in numerous ways to improve learning and student-teacher interaction. In this editorial our aim is to briefly discuss virtual worlds in the context of education, with the focus of educational accessibility for students with disabilities. more »

Educational institutions have also been influenced by this technological evolution. This has generated some important shifts in the educational paradigm that have consequently lead to some changes in the learning processes. Although e-learning represents one of the most important consequences of such educational paradigm evolutions, its relative benefits have still not been fully demonstrated. Thus, a new educational paradigm shift has emerged: blended learning. This phenomenon is not new in the literature, but recently it is increasingly gaining support as the model of the future in higher education, especially in international institutions in constant quest for excellence and innovation in the learning experiences they propose to their learners. How are educational institutions facing the use of technology for educational purposes? How do they have to change in order to be ready for successfully adopting this kind of learning model? In this paper we intend to answer these questions, and to provide some recommendations to educational institutions in order to help them understand how to lead the change processes necessary for blended learning to become a full-fledged reality at their schools. more »

However, extant research has had very little to say about the antecedents that shape the adoption and diffusion of ICT across companies. In order to shed light on the phenomenon under investigation, this paper presents a comparative case study between five Italian companies that have instituted a corporate university. By distinguishing companies in typical cases and deviant cases with regard to the extensive use of e-learning technologies, our findings provide some useful insights about the antecedents that make companies more or less prone to employ the new frontiers of technology in their CUs. more »

Three levels of analysis were brought to bear in designing the proposed intervention format: first, the factors likely to influence the effectiveness of a virtual team; second, the needs and challenges related to the early stages of the virtual team membership; third, the role of the human resource function in promoting – via training and development programmes – the knowledge and skills needed for virtual teams to be successful. The research questions included: What are the perceived benefits and challenges associated with the early stages of virtual collaboration? What factors must be carefully defined and managed when running a virtual team? What training needs are perceived by inexperienced virtual team members? How can training and development initiatives contribute to the effectiveness of virtual teams? A qualitative approach based on the model developed by Bal & Gundry was used to analyse data from five interviews with virtual team members at Nielsen TAM Italy. The outcomes informed the proposed blended training programme. more »

In particular, it goes through the analysis of the impact of the use of information technology in high school students’ performance. It describes and analyzes the initiative carried on by Impara Digitale Study Center: 370 students from different high schools experienced a full school year with a new teaching model, using tablets and computers instead of text books, according to a cooperative model, where each learner adopted his own device. The experience is paramount and it opens a stream of questions for further and more extensive diffusion, i.e. institutionalizing the adoption of personal devices in learning environments. We explored the different theories that can help with answers and we designed our research by using the widely adopted TAM Model, where grades are used as a measure of learning effectiveness. We also measured learning effectiveness in a control sample, using in the same schools same teachers and more traditional learning approaches. Our conclusions show that the new method improves students’ performance only if teachers, who play a pivotal role in their technology acceptance, properly support them. more »

E-learning refers to the utilization of electronic innovations to convey and encourage training anytime and anywhere. There is a need to create a personalized environment that involves collecting a range of information about each learner. Questionnaires are one way of gathering information on learning style, but there are some problems with their usage, such as reluctance to answer questions as well as guesses the answer being time consuming. Ontology-based semantic retrieval is a hotspot of current research, because ontologies play a paramount part in the development of knowledge. In this paper, a novel way to build an adaptive ontological student profile by analysis of learning patterns through a learning management system, according to the Felder-Silverman learning style model (FSLSM) and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) theory is proposed more »

Such tools can be as obvious and traditional as pencils and a notebook, or as complex and innovative as websites and multi-user virtual environments. Typical in-person learning environments, such as classrooms and meeting rooms, are at times not the best solution to enable and maximize a student's ability to learn. Although they do fulfil their purpose of giving students the possibility of reaching course material and instructors, they also create a barrier that cannot be easily overcome. Web-based instruction and multi-user virtual environments break the time-limited barrier innate to typical lectures and explore, through innovative technologies, a concept as old as humankind: socialization and the feeling of belonging to a community. Many universities, public institutions and private businesses are projecting themselves on the Internet and in virtual worlds to reach the customer at any time, giving them the idea of virtual presence that cannot be delivered through a simple website. This observation sparks the idea that is at the very foundation of this publication. more »
