Abstract

This review examines the policy implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Indonesia, focusing on the regulatory landscape, opportunities, and challenges. In response to rapid technological advancements, particularly within the fourth industrial revolution, the Indonesian government has enacted several key laws, including the Electronic Information and Transactions Law and the Data Protection Law. In 2023, the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Informatics issued Circular Letter Number 9 of 2023 concerning Artificial Intelligence Ethics, serving as a guideline for the ethical use of AI and assisting organizations in formulating internal policies for AI utilization. Despite these efforts, challenges persist, such as addressing ethical concerns—including privacy, misinformation, and algorithmic bias—and aligning with global regulatory standards. This review analyses Indonesia's current regulatory framework, evaluates the readiness to navigate ethical and practical challenges, and discusses the potential for developing a robust framework that supports innovation while ensuring the responsible use of AI.
