Abstract

This paper presents a description of a simulation model of Derby [2], a modern database management system (DBMS). The goal of the project was to develop a model of the entire system (hardware, DBMS and application) that could be used to study performance of the DBMS and to explore issues associated with developing a cluster version of the DBMS. Most of the structures in the real DBMS were represented by analogs in the model. A set of results demonstrate the degree of accuracy that might expected for this type of model.
