Abstract

The complexity of sentences is one important aspect that needs to be considered in learning to write, specifically writing in second language learning. The second language in this context is Indonesian as a foreign language. This study aims to describe the complexity of sentences in learning to write in BIPA classrooms. The research method used is the document analysis method. The objects of this study were 8 students of BIPA at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The data in this study are Indonesian ssentences from the essay text produced by BIPA students including; diaries, favorite foods, unforgettable experiences, visit to Sekaten, and procedure text. The results of this study indicate that the complexity of sentences in the essay text is determined by 1) the number of words produced, 2) the type of sentence used. The more words produced, the more complex the sentences produced. The highest number of words produced is 790 words. The average number of words each student can produce is 386 word and can know that in making a text, students are able to write as many as 77 words. Along the most dominant type of word used is equivalent single and compound sentences.
