Abstract

Someone who is learning a foreign language needs to pay attention to how native speakers of the language speak. The foreign students need to be able to speak properly, especially in intonation of the language. The purpose of the research is to analyze the intonation of the native speaker of Japanese in uttering Indonesian declarative and interrogative sentences. The subject of this research is a native speaker of Japanese who learned Bahasa. The focus of this research is to describe the characterization of the sentence intonation such as intonation pattern of the utterance, pitch, and contour. This research is descriptive qualitative research with Institute voor Perceptive Onderzoek (IPO) approach so the focus of this research is an experiment of utterance production, acoustic analyze, and perception of the utterance. For acoustic analyzing, this research uses software Praat. The result of this research found that there were differences in pitch contour, final pitch, and peak pitch of the intonation of the speech produced by Japanese speaker and Indonesian speaker. And the intonation speech produced by a Japanese speaker is still understandable for Indonesian speakers.
