Abstract
In order to demonstrate the degree of individuation of the entity of personhood that occurs in the news texts, this paper analyzes the element of animation in Indonesian news texts from kompas.com and cnnindonesia.com. According to the study, Indonesian writers and speakers frequently refer to people using common noun phrases, illustrating the purpose of reference in relation to other people. The idea of news texts emphasizes information, therefore it would be more efficient to mention a person’s functions rather than using pronouns to refer to them, even though this can lessen the level of individuation of an animate thing.
