Abstract
In this paper, highly miniaturized antenna elements arranged in a linear phased array form is introduced for fifth-generation (5G) cellular communications. The configuration of the design is composed of eight compact folded-dipole in the x-y plane located at the top portion of the smartphone printed circuit board (PCB) with Rogers RT5880 substrate an overall size of 75×150×0.8 mm3. The antenna elements and ground plane are etched on the same layer. The proposed phased array is highly compact in size and occupies only 0.5 mm (clearance) of the PCB ground plane. Fundamental characteristics of the designed phased array antenna are studied. The designed antenna exhibit wide beam-steering, high efficiencies, and sufficient gain levels at 28 GHz, a 5G candidate band. In addition, the proposed phased array design has sufficient radiation behavior in the presence of user-hand in data-mode.
