Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of group counseling with cognitive restructuring techniques on the body image of eighth grade students at UPT SMP Negeri 3 Medan. This study uses a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design, namely one group pre-test post-test design. The subjects of the study involved 32 eighth grade students who had low body image. The instrument used was a questionnaire, and after the data filtering process, 8 students were selected as subjects to take part in group counseling with cognitive restructuring techniques. The questionnaire was given before and after the counseling session. Data analysis was carried out using the Wilcoxon Test via SPSS Statistics version 27. The test results showed an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.012, greater than 0.05 (0.012 > 0.05). The average pre-test score was 67.875, while the post-test increased to 123.125 with a difference of 55.25 or 44.87%. These results indicate a significant increase in body image after counseling, so the research hypothesis is accepted. This confirms that group counseling with cognitive restructuring techniques significantly affects the body image of grade VIII students at UPT SMP Negeri 3 Medan.
