Abstract
Malaysia was one of the most impacted countries by the COVID-19 crisis, with detrimental effects on the world of sports. The prolonged inactivity impact, and lack of in-person interactions among teammates-coaches, could negatively affect athletes. Considering stress contributing factors in performance, this study aims to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on perceived stress level between male and female elite athletes. One hundred and thirty-nine competitive male (n=63) and female (n=76) athletes listed in the PODIUM program representing Malaysia completed the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10) questionnaire originally adopted from Cohen, Kamarch, and Mermelstein (1983). Independent T-test showed a significant difference between male and female elite athletes on perceived stress, t (89.53) =-2.16, p=0.033. Female (M=20.13, SD=5.78) elite athletes reported having high perceived stress compared to males (M=18.38, SD=3.02). This evidence may raise awareness of the distress effect of COVID-19 among elite athletes and suggest that training regimens and healthy behaviours during pandemic crises should be introduced as healthy habits for healthy well-being. The application of specific well-being protocols for female athletes should be encouraged.
