Abstract
Renah Alai isolect is one of the Malay isolects used in Renah Alai Village, Jangkat District, Merangin Regency, Jambi Province. Nasals in this isolect are interesting to study as they have different development from other isolects in the surrounding areas. The purpose of this study is to explain nasal development in Renah Alai isolect from their mother language, namely Proto Malayic. The data are obtained directly from informants using the listening and interviewing method. Identity method with top-down and bottom-up approaches are used to analyze the data. The results of this study indicate that the nasals in Renah Alai isolect are not always derived from the Proto Malayic nasal and conversely, the nasals in the Proto Malayic did not always become the nasals in the Renah Alai isolect. The development of the nasals can be divided into six groups. The nasals have developed in a quite variety in the words’ final position.
