Abstract
This research discusses the evolution of the existence and authority of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) following the amendment of the 1945 Constitution (UUD 1945) in Indonesia. The amendments were made to address the imbalance of power that existed previously, where the MPR had a dominant role in governance, including policy-making and executive oversight. Through the amendments, the authority of the MPR was limited, focusing on essential functions such as the inauguration and dismissal of the President and Vice President, who are directly elected by the people. Although the role of the MPR in policy formation diminished, its function as a watchdog and balancer of power among state institutions remains strategically important in maintaining political stability and democracy. It reflects Indonesia's efforts to strengthen democratic principles and popular sovereignty by adjusting the powers of state institutions according to political dynamics and societal demands.
