Abstract
The development of autonomous driving technology has been greatly accelerated in recent years, impelled by such large companies as Tesla and by the IoT and 5G/6G networks. We review here the enormous potential of IoT and 5G/6G networks in making AVs operate autonomously in general, securely, efficiently, and in a timely manner. IoT is responsible for providing real-time environmental data from sensors, cameras, and LiDAR devices, while 5G/6G networks support the needed communications infrastructure to realize speed and high bandwidth with reliability in data exchange among vehicles and infrastructure. In addition, AI, edge computing, and IoT will further improve the decision-making and system responsiveness that are crucial components toward safe and efficient AVs. There are still some issues that have to be overcome, such as issues with data transmission lag times, network stability, and data security, primarily in high-speed environments. When 5G/6G networks emerge with novel AI and edge computing, it will accelerate the creation of the next generation of AD features. This paper explores such systems and their future that, besides addressing challenges, advance the security, scalability, and dependability of the autonomous driving system.
