Abstract
Recently, the extensive origins, inadequate control, and challenging decomposition of microplastics (MPs) have posed a significant risk to both ecosystems and people health. Continuous advancement of various technologies is crucial for the efficient eradication of MPs pollution from the environment. Initially, a concise overview was provided in this review about the variety and origins of MPs found in aquatic environments. Afterwards, the effectiveness of diverse water treatment technologies in eliminating MPs was explored, including methods such as sorption, membrane separation, electrocoagulation, photocatalysis, peroxide oxidation, and the use of microorganisms or enzymes. This review establishes a scientific foundation for efficient elimination of MPs from water, offering valuable insights into effective removal techniques.
