Abstract
This research is aimed to obtain the accurate data of (1) the sketch drawing ability of Arts Education Department of 2022 year college students in Universitas Negeri Medan, (2) the supporting and inhibiting factors for the sketch drawing ability of Arts Education Department of 2022 year college students in Universitas Negeri Medan. This research is descriptive qualitative. The sample of the research was 33 students. The data collection techniques used in this research are observation, interviews, documentation, and practice tests. The research results show that (1) the sketch drawing ability of Arts Education Department of 2022 year college students in Universitas Negeri Medan is in the moderate average category with a score of 71.42. The details of the scores are as follows: there are 3 students or 9,09% in very good, 12 students or 36,4% getting in good predicate, 15 students or 45,45% of students in moderate category, meanwhile 3 students or 9,09% are in less good category. Through the results acquisitions, further research is certainly needed to improve the students' ability to draw sketches. (2) Several difficulties faced in drawing sketches according to the results of interviews were due to a lack of understanding of perspective. The students also have difficulty in capturing the object they want to draw. In addition, they also have difficulty in determining the proportions, and they lack the ability to apply sketching principles.
