Abstract
The aim of this research is to find out the changing and the differences mother’s role by comparing a family story, Kazoku Game (Family Game), as depicted in a movie released in 1983 and in serial drama TV on air in 2013. I try to examine the mother’s role by examining the relations between family members, their attitude toward each other (husband-wife and parents-children), the role in the family, their perception toward work and schooling, and their social life. Japanese society has experienced tremendous changes within the above-mentioned period, and family system must also have been changed considerably. By comparing how the family and the attitude of each family members toward mother are depicted on the screen, which can be regarded as representative of the mother’s role that widely shared by the general audience, I try to discern the concrete changes that happened in the society, and explain those changes in relation with socio-economical changes in Japanese society during the above-mentioned period.
