Abstract

The west coast of Sumatra island has a high potential for earthquakes that can trigger a tsunami. One area that has an increased vulnerability to tsunami disasters is Padang City. Padang is the largest city on the west coast of Sumatra island and the capital of West Sumatra province, which is geographically close to the megathrust fault. The objective of this study was to see how much the current land cover condition of Padang City is quite dynamic in reducing tsunami waves. The tsunami modeling in this study used a sea level rise of 11 meters at the coastline. The decrease in water level blocked by land use in Padang City is calculated, and to determine the affected area, Cost-Distance analysis is used. The modeling results affect 9,483 hectares, covering 9 of the total 11 sub-districts in Padang. Koto Tangah sub-districts have the broadest potential impact, covering an area of 4,666 hectares. Settlement land cover is the type of land cover with the most significant potential to be affected, which is 3,279 hectares with a total number of buildings affected as many as 101,058.
