Abstract
Considering the importance of smooth functioning of teams to project-based organisations, this paper reviews the literature on Relationship Conflict - being the more damaging of the different conflict types. Its causes, impact on team processes and performance, linkage with Task Conflict, and the effectiveness of resolution approaches commonly employed are examined. Implications for teamwork professionals and organisations are discussed, to enhance the understanding and handling of Relationship Conflict as a necessary and integral part of project management practice. The objective is to better understand the behavioural triggers of Relationship Conflict during the execution of projects, and possible approaches to systemically reduce/resolve such conflict, that can lead to better management and improve performance.
