Abstract
This article discusses energy-efficient routing approaches in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This follows characterization and exploration with another proposed scientific classification recognizing certain classes of protocols as specific: delay-based routing and power efficiency, next-hop selection, network architecture, link initiators, network topology, protocol operation, delivery. mode, installation path, and application type. We analyze these classes, discuss representative routing protocols (mechanisms, advantages, disadvantages..) and compare them based on various parameters within the respective class.
