Abstract
Location aware computing is a new field of research that advocates the development applications for mobile computing platforms that allow users to make use of the mobile data access that wireless communications provide and take advantage of the location context of data. However, the deployment of location aware computing has been limited by the lack of accurate, low cost wireless terminal location methods. This paper introduces a non-parametric method for locating wireless terminals where the location estimates are weighted averages of the positions of survey points within the network environment. The weights are determined by the amount of similarity between the received signal strengths measurements made by the wireless terminal and the measurements made at the survey point locations. This paper demonstrates how to tune this algorithm based on the survey data without requiring an excessive number of survey points to be collected in the network area.
