Abstract

This paper discusses the carrier perspective on baseline capabilities and technology tradeoffs in the capacity planning methods in the context of the evolution of the DSL Access network. Capacity improvements are being made possible by new modem technologies and deeper deployments (shorter loop lengths). DSL networks are evolving from a service-specific (Internet Access) infrastructure to one that must support multiple services. Emerging multimedia service requirements (e.g., for voice) are considered from the perspective of the additional design constraints (e.g., delay) that impact DSL network design and its operation.
