Abstract
In this paper we introduce a distributed and dynamic location area management scheme (DD scheme) for personal communication system (PCS). In this scheme each mobile terminal has a different location area (LA). The size of LA is dynamic according to the characteristic of movement and call arriving of the mobile terminal (MT). The cells in LA are the cells that MT is visiting or has visited. In LA there is an agent cell, which manages the other cells called general cells, and acts as VLR in GSM. We also introduce a discrete analytical model for the schemes, which describes the updating cost and paging cost. Analytical results are provided to demonstrate that the scheme has better performance than the GSM scheme.
