Abstract

While open science is growing in popularity and especially publishing as open access is common and has proven its success in today’s research, sharing of research data in terms of open data is still lacking behind. INPTDAT provides a platform to share research data in the field of plasma technology. In the course of this, the project QPTDat aims to increase the incentives to publish, share, and reuse research data, following FAIR principles and fostering the idea of open data. QPTDat identified the following main success factors: Authors need a secure proof of authorship to guarantee that they are credited for their work; a proof of data integrity, to ensure that reused data has not been modified or fabricated; a convincing system for quality curation, to ensure high quality of published data and metadata; and comprehensive reputation management, to give an additional incentive to share research data. This paper discusses these requirements in detail, presents use cases and concepts for their implementation using blockchain technology and finally draws a conclusion regarding utilisation of blockchain technology in the context of open data, summarising the findings in form of a research agenda.
