Abstract

Versatile Video Coding (VVC) achieves better performance with about 40% bitrate reduction compared to H.265/HEVC under the same video quality. The improvement of VVC coding performance is at the cost of increased computational complexity of the VVC encoder. To address this issue, a fast algorithm for VVC intra prediction based on gradient information of coding unit (CU) is proposed in this paper. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed algorithm can save 47.78% coding time on average as compared with VTM7.0 with 2.25% increase in BDBR and 0.09 dB loss in PSNR.
