Abstract
This paper explores the professional development needs of secondary school English teachers from multilingual areas in Yunnan, P. R. China, in particular, the strength of their language learning attitudes and in-service training motivation, the correlations between their language learning attitudes and in-service training motivation, and their difficulties and solutions in English teaching. The data analysis indicates three major findings: (1) attitudes to English contribute most to the motivation to participate in in-service training; (2) attitudes to English speakers have considerable effect on the motivation in relation to professional advancement and cognitive interest; (3) instrumental attitudes to English lead to particular practical needs in teaching training.
