Abstract
Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have become a critical part of Internet protocol (IP) networks, in particular in the last or first mile. They can be applied to many scenarios such as home networking, community networking, enterprise networking, and so on. On the other hand, voice over IP (VoIP) provides an attractive approach to delivering voice traffic over different types of IP networks. Thus, VoIP has become one of the killer applications in WMNs. To date few research work has been carried out to investigate the performance of VoIP over WMNs, and many challenging issues remain to be resolved. In this paper approaches in multiple protocol layers are proposed to tackle these issues. They are also prototyped on a testbed based on Linux embedded systems. Experimental results from field trials demonstrate that the proposed approaches can significantly improve the performance of VoIP calls over WMNs.
