Abstract
A new architecture called "light trail" has recently been proposed for use in optical networks for carrying data traffic. Reducing the number of light trails that must be setup to service connection requests as they arrive is an important light trail design problem for which there is currently no efficient heuristic algorithm available. In this paper, we propose and present simulation results of a heuristic approach for reducing the number of light trails that need to be setup in a survivable optical network in order to accept as many of the dynamically-arriving connection requests as possible.
