Abstract

In this paper we present a modular wireless sensor network (WSN) gateway design. WSN gateways are often employed to provide WSN access for the hosts in wide-area networks. As WSNs have gained more importance in industry and research a plethora of protocols with different structures and layering concepts has emerged. In addition, varied wide-area networks may require connectivity with the same WSN. Since it is not practical to employ separate gateways for all protocol combinations, a WSN gateway design with a configurable engine for protocol translation is preferable. Our main goal is to provide a modular application layer WSN gateway framework that allows the gateway to be deployed in heterogeneous network environments and enables remote upgrading. We also report on early implementation efforts of such a gateway.
