This paper introduces the field of pervasive media, the use of pervasive computing to deliver applications and services into peoples’ lives, and the problems of creating and distributing pervasive media applications to mobile phones. It determines the requirements of a development platform for pervasive media applications through analysis of a range of pervasive media applications, including games and tourism based applications. It then evaluates a number of platforms against those requirements, including J2ME and native Smartphone development. The paper then introduces HTML5 and through a description of its features evaluates it against the requirements. Finally it concludes that HTML5 is a good solution to the problems of creating and distributing most pervasive media applications and describes its advantages and disadvantages compared to existing solutions.

Among the key objectives of the smart grid technology are to foster the grid integration of renewable energy as well as market participation of domestic energy consumers through demand response program. Energy storage remains a key component of the smart grid. Past works on integration of energy storage at the domestic side of the electricity grid has identified the electric vehicle technology (EV) and the embedded energy storage (EES) technology, etc. However, it was difficult to compare between these technologies in terms of business incentives and technical performance. This was investigated in this work, and the results are presented. It was propose to use percentage difference to compare between VPP with EES and VPP with EV. The results shows that the difference in prosumers incentives between VPP with EES and VPP with EV is very low. It is approximately 0.89%. However, the percentage difference in VPP operator profit between VPP with EES and VPP with EV is very high. It is approximately 85.3%. The VPP makes very high profit in the VPP EES case compared to VPP EV case. The same also applies to the VPP cumulative performance where the percentage difference in the VPP cumulative performance between VPP with EES and VPP with EV is approximately 10.9%. This has implication on the storage mechanism to be integrated in to a VPP at the domestic level as well the business model to be adopted.

Digital watermarking is the process of embedding information into a digital signal, i.e. audio, pictures, video, etc. Embedded marks in the message are generally imperceptible but can be detected or extracted. By imperceptibly hiding information into the video content it is possible to provide copy protection .The embedding takes place by manipulating the content of the digita l data, which means the information is not embedded in the frame around the data. If the signal is copied, then the embedded information is also in the copy. So, Watermarking is an emerging technology that is claimed to have an important application in copy protection. A variety of watermarking techniques have been proposed by researchers for the copy-protection. This paper presents an extensive review of the prevailing literature in watermarking for copy protection.

Distributed denial of service attack is a major threat to the availability of internet services and resources. The current internet infrastructure is vulnerable to DDoS attacks and has no built in mechanism to defend against them. The main task of the defense system is to accurately detect and respond against DDoS attacks. A variety of DDoS defense solutions are available but having difficulties to choose among them. There are different places in the internet, where a defense system can be deployed. The various points in the internet where defense systems can be deployed are identified and discussed here. A comparative analysis of different defense schemes corresponding to deployment points are also carried out. The main aim of this review paper is to provide an individual or academia to insight into various possible deployments locations suitable for DDoS defense system. It helps them to choose an appropriate defense method and suitable deployment location.

Creating ensembles of random but “realistic” topologies for complex systems is crucial for many tasks such as benchmark generation and algorithm analysis. In general, explanatory models are preferred to capture topologies of technological and biological complex systems, and some researchers claimed that it is largely impossible to capture any nontrivial network structure while ignoring domain-specific constraints. We study topology models of specific spatial networks, and show that a simple descriptive model, the generalized random graph model (GRG) which only reproduces the degree sequence of complex networks, can closely match the topologies of a variety of real-world spatial networks including electronic circuits, brain and neural networks and transportation networks, and outperform some plausible and explanatory models which consider spatial constraints.

Query optimization is a process of selecting an optimal Query Execution Plan from a number of plans available for execution of query which is very critical to the performance of a relational database. Picasso is a Query Optimizer analysis tool developed in the Database lab of Indian Institute of Science [24]. Using Picasso we can visualize the query execution plans and can implement a technique known as Plan Diagram Reduction [15][16][17] which can effectively increase the Query Optimizer performance. In this paper we briefly introduce the query optimization concept and then perform an exhaustive analysis of the reduction algorithms and try to establish some hard fact about their relative performance and reduction efficiency.

Indian regional navigation satellite system (IRNSS) is our own navigation system designed to provide various navigational and timing services in Indian region. The present paper discusses ionospheric scintillation effects on IRNSS signals in Surat, (21.16°N, 72.68°E; Geomagnetic 12.90°N, 147.35°E) India, a low latitude station. Ionospheric scintillations are one of the major sources of errors in satellite communication which may results in loss of lock of with particular satellite causing discontinuity of satellite services. Ionospheric Scintillation is experienced by satellite signals when propagating through various layers of atmosphere in terms of random fluctuations in amplitude and phase of signals, and also causes ionospheric delay. The present analysis is done on 3 October 2015 data for calculation of Ionospheric scintillation measuring parameters like total electron content (TEC) and Vertical TEC using IRNSS data. During this time only four satellites were launched from PRN 1 to 4 by Indian space research organization (ISRO). The comparative behavioral analysis of TEC variation is done using Gaussian distribution function (GDF) and Nakagami m (NGK) model distribution. The carrier to noise (C/N) ratio and elevation angle variations for satellite PRN numbers from 1 through 4 is also carried out. It is seen from comparative analysis that total electron content variations in this geographical location are more following the Nakagami distribution as compared with GDF. The results can be utilized further for developing model for analyzing variations in TEC in this region.

Feature extraction is a proficient method for reducing dimensions in the analysis and prediction of cancer classification. Microarray procedure has shown great importance in fetching informative genes th at needs enhancement in diagnosis. Microarray data is a challenging task due to high dimensional-low sample dataset with a lot of noisy or irrelevant genes and missing data. In this paper, a comparative study to demonstrate the effectiveness of feature ext raction as a dimensionality reduction process is proposed, and concludes by investigating the most efficient approach that can be used to enhance classification of microarray. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) as an unsupervised technique and Partial Least Square (PLS) as a supervised technique are considered, Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier were applied on the dataset. The overall result shows that PLS algorithm provides an improved performance of about 95.2% accu racy compared to PCA algorithms.

A compact UWB antenna has been presented based on planar-patterned structures. This antenna’s radiating element has been constructed four identical unit cells along one axis fed with a microstrip line. This antenna is printed on low dielectric FR4 material of 1.6 mm thickness with 18.97 mm × 27.16 mm antenna size. High-frequency structural simulator (HFSS) has been adopted in this research for performing all the simulations. The 16.84 GHz (3.07 to 19.91 GHz) impedance bandwidth has been achieved in measurements through the antenna.

A physically compact dual band antenna design is presented for use in mobile WLAN and mid-band WiMAX applications. The antenna design is based on a monopole, with a combination of metamaterial inspired features, based on a defected ground structure (GDS) and a complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR). A single CSRR unit cell is placed over a pentagonal monopole antenna, producing a narrow stop-band frequency in the range from 2.40 GHz to 2.49 GHz. The second operating frequency ranges from 3.44 GHz to 6.25 GHz, the broad-banding being due to the influence of the defected ground structure. The antenna design was optimized using HFSS, paying close attention to size constraints, and ease of integration with the radio front end. Simulation results for return loss, gain and radiation pattern are analyzed and presented.
