In 2008, ICST has become a voting member of the Publishers International Linking Association (PILA), an international, non-profit organization bringing together the world’s leading scholarly publishers. Through ICST’s PILA membership, scientific content featured in ICST publications and deposited in European Union Digital Library (EU Digital Library) is fully integrated in the CrossRef initiative, the largest global inter-publisher cooperation project. For a complete list of publishers participating in the CrossRef initiative, please visit http://crossref.org/01company/06publishers.html.
CrossRef is a not-for-profit network founded on publisher collaboration, with a mandate to make reference linking throughout online scholarly literature efficient and reliable. As such, it is an infrastructure for linking citations across publishers, and the only full-scale implementation of the Digital Object Identifier (or DOI) System to date. CrossRef is the official DOI registration agency for scholarly and professional publications, including journals, books, and other content types. CrossRef provides primary publishers with the organizational and technological backbone to facilitate linking by associating DOIs with publisher metadata.
CrossRef's general purpose is to promote the development and cooperative use of new and innovative technologies to speed and facilitate scholarly research. CrossRef is a collaborative reference linking service that functions as a sort of digital switchboard. It holds no full text content, but rather effects linkages through DOIs, which are tagged to article metadata supplied by the participating publishers. The end result is an efficient, scalable linking system through which a researcher can click on a reference citation in a journal and access the cited article.
